Car crashes have all different causes, but when they are the result of someone else’s negligence, they should never have to happen. When someone decides to drive recklessly, distracted or intoxicated, he or she is making an unsafe choice that could result in the loss of someone else’s life. This is what police say happened in a recent fatal motor vehicle accident here in North Carolina that they are blaming on an intoxicated driver.
The crash happened recently, early on a Sunday morning on a state highway. According to police, a man driving a large passenger truck was traveling north at a high rate of speed. His truck allegedly rear-ended a car. The driver of that vehicle did not survive the crash and a passenger in the same car had to be rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
Police have charged the truck driver with several crimes, including felony driving while intoxicated and felony death by motor vehicle. He is currently in jail awaiting further legal action. Officers did not disclose how they determined the driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
No matter what the outcome of the criminal charges in connection with this motor vehicle accident may be, the family of the man who died as well as the injured victim may have other means of legal recourse. They could each decide to file a wrongful death claim and a personal injury claim as a means of holding the driver or anyone else deemed responsible accountable. A civil claim may result in monetary damages that could be used to cover expenses related to this tragedy. Those here in North Carolina in a similar situation may want to consult an attorney to determine how to proceed.
